F O R E S T C R E A T U R E

"Forest Creature are the duo of audio-visual artists Ben Moon and Richard Sides, who originate from Rotherham and Stockport, but now consider themselves firmly rooted in Sheffield, where they met at art college. Frustrated Analogue is their first properly released CD, after a handful of CD-Rs and cassette releases. The seven unnamed tracks make economical use of rythmic mechanistic palpitations, awash with pulsing dark matter and steadily boiling frequencies. In comparison to 2008's With Patrick Derbyshire CDR-a combination of Industrial drones and fractious sonic assault - this release is more simplistic, like Black Dice circa Load Blown, but stripped back to the bold stripes of its primary components and splashed with the viscous Acid beats and sieved synth droplets of early Warp releases.

There are other comparisons to be made, too - the looped clicks in track two could be lifted from Matmos's A Chance To Cut Is A Chance To Cure, and there's something of Fuck Buttons in track three's shimmering synths. However Frustrated Analogue avoids being derivative, having been created amid the sometimes stark environmental shifts between countryside and industry in Sheffield. Paradoxically, for all the heavyweight Industrial tones, there's still a corporeal, organic quality in the density of the electronics, creating a dichotomy between what are aurally interpreted as sounds from outside and inside an imagined body.
The best example is track five's amplified heartbeats and echoing pulses, morphed from the forth track's impressionistic sounds of crisply pounding fists and rippling flesh. It's violent and intense without being aggressively confrontational - a euphoria of industrial simplicity refracted through an adolescence of Peak District raves and grimy skylines."

Αυτή ήταν η κριτική που με οδήγησε στη μεγαλοφυία των Forest Creature-γραμμένη ακριβώς πριν την κριτική για-την εμμονή μου-τους Fuck Buttons. Kατά μία έννοια λοιπόν οι FB ήταν αυτοί που με οδήγησαν στο Frustrated Analogue, το 32 λεπτο CD των Forest Creature με τα 7 άτιτλα tracks. Το edit 3 μάλιστα αν το ακούσεις αποσπασματικά νομίζεις ότι είναι κομμάτι των FB. Στο σύνολο όμως δεν έχουν καμία σχέση με τους FB πέρα από αυτό το τελεολογικό συναίσθημα που σου προκαλούν. Κάτι ανάλογο με την αναπόφευκτη αρχική σύγκριση των FB με τους Growing[παρεπιμπτόντως οι FB στην αμερικανική τους περιοδεία από 1 Νοέμβρη εμφανίζονται μαζί με τους Growing]. Δεν έχω τις μουσικές γνώσεις για να κάνω την ανάλυση της παρθενικής δουλειάς των Forest Creature. Oι ίδιοι στο myspace τους αυτοπροσδιορίζονται techno / psychedelic. Mπορείς να το πεις και έτσι. Δεν ξέρω πως να αποκαλέσεις το μουσικό σταυροδρόμι που επεξεργάζονται οι Growing, oι FB και οι Forest Creature-o καθένας από την καταβολή του. Είναι όμως από αισθητική πλευρά το είδος που συντονίζομαι απόλυτα, το Helmet's genre. Aν κάποιος θέλει να ακούσει μόνο ένα κομμάτι από το Frustrated Analogue των Forest Creature, εν είδει single, θα πρότεινα το Edit 2. Διαφορετικά δεν έχει κάποιο νόημα να αποσπάσεις κάποιο track. Αν και είναι πολύ διαφορετικά μεταξύ τους συνθετικά, λειτουργούν ως ενότητα σε αυτό το μισάωρο ταξίδι.
